Brief Introduction of the Gubei Water Town

The Gubei Water Town lies under the Simatai Great Wall. It is a replica of Wuzhen water town located in Southern China. Gubei water town is a a beautiful re-creation of the old style villages that are away from the hustle and bustle of the central Beijing area.

With picturesque rivers and streams dot the Gubei Water town, over 20 hotels and local houses that are available to stay in, and plenty of shopping and restaurants to choose from,  Gubei water town is the ideal resort destination for families or couples who wish to enjoy a weekend getaway.  Even a day trip to Gubei Water Town is enough to enjoy the area.

Gubei Water Town is located in the Miyun County in Beijing, approx. 2.5 hours ride from Beijing.

What to see in Gubei Water Town
Simatai Great Wall

Best part of Gubei water town is the Simati Great Wall itself. Simatai East is partially restored and has been open for a time. Visitors can enjoy the walk from tower 1 to tower 10 and return. This walk takes approximately 2 to 3 hours.

Walking up Simtatai Great Wall takes a great deal of physical effort and a lot of confidence, as the stairs are steep if you want to go to the top. There are some sections without sides and the steep slopes guide you on the narrow stairsteps. However, if you’re in reasonable shape and just take your time, you’ll do just fine.

You can also take a cable up. It’s a steep 7-minute ride up the side of the mountain, and it’s considered to be very safe. The wall itself is strictly controlled for numbers so that only so many can go up it at a time. The views are fantastic but bear in mind to take water with you as there isn’t any available at the top. There are lots of photo opportunities along the path. The Great Wall is lit up at night and exceptionally beautiful.

As Simatai West section including sky bridge over Simatai lake, zip line are closed. The original zip line is not available anymore.

Gubei water town a good place to walk around and enjoy what an old village would have looked like. At night the town is well lit and the view is breathtaking. You’ll feel as if you are in old China when you’re walking around the town at night. Old world charm meets modern here. You won’t be surprised to find out that a ton of adverts, shows, and movies have been filmed here.

Experience Local Customs

There is plenty to do besides climbing the wall like archery and traditional games. Take a visit to the plaza in the middle of town and enjoy the traditional theater show. There are many great acts and acrobats performing the dragon dance and more.

You can also learn how to create your own lantern, kites, and sand bottles. Learn about ecological cloth dying at Youngshun House and enjoy the beauty of the hanging drapes.

The best time to take a trip

The best time to go would be spring, summer and fall. The beautiful natural colors in the season will make your experience mesmerizing. During wintertime the temperatures can be too low outside. It’s not recommended to get there in winter.

Where to eat

There are plenty of restaurants from luxury to simple family style. Lots of boutique shopping with set prices and no one hassling you to buy. Most restaurants have English menus for you to choose from.

How to get there

It takes at least 2.5 hours to  Gubei Water Town by car from Beijing each way. Take bus number 980 from Dongzhimen Station to Miyun West Bridge Station and then take bus number 51 to Simatai Village from there. Returning back to Beijing is a lot easier since there is a direct bus route from Gubei to Dongzhimen Station.
