Simatai reopening–recent experience report

Recently I spent half day at the construction site of Simatai. It only took me 1.5 hours to get to Simatai with little traffic. Simatai is closed from 17 June 2010 as the result of agreement to redevelope the Simatai area for a hot springs resort between Miyun local district government and CYTS in June 2010.

Re-opening date of Great Wall Simatai is unclear but I was told by local villagers and security guard working for Simatai administrative office that Simatai will reopen in May 2013. No official notice yet. Be prepared to adjust your travel plan to Jinshanling, Mutianyu, GubeikouJiankou or other sections of Great Wall while you are in Beijing.

The hot springs resort at the foot of Simatai is under construction.

Great Wall Simatai is about 120 Km / 75miles from Beijing but with the freeway it takes about 2.5 hours to get there. It is less-crowded, a bit more untouched and often you feel you are on the Wall on your own (not like Badaling which is closer to Beijing is overun with tourists).

Originally built during the Northern Qi dynasty (550–577) and rebuilt in the Hongwu years of the Ming dynasty by General Qi Jiguang, Simatai Great Wall retains the original features of the Ming dynasty Great Wall. It has the best view or ups and downs. The scenery is stunning.

Simatai Great Wall is around 3.4miles/5.4km in length, with 35 watchtowers. It is separated into eastern and western parts by a valley, with a rainbow-like chain bridge over the valley. Eastern part has 16 watchtower while western part has 18 watchtowers. It is a favorite for photographers who specialized in Great Wall. If you have time, an overnight stay allows you to watch sunrise early in the morning or sunset in the afternoon. There are several good hotels within 10 minutes walk to the foot of the Wall.

It’s predicted that Simatai will be re-opened in May 2013 and the original hike from Jinshanling to Simatai can be done only halfway. You can still walk to tower 22 (Simatai West) rather than tower 30 and then have to stop at Qilin Tower and exit from the newly constructed trail, or go back the same way you came to Jinshanling. You will be followed by vendors selling ice-water and souvenirs while you are hiking this section, but it is relatively peaceful, not too crowded, and less refurbished. Words don’t describe what’s happening at Simatai, so perhaps the photos I shared will help.

How to go to Ming Tombs and Sacred Way?

Ming tombs Sacred Way Bus 872
The Ming general holding his hammer with a serious face.

The Ming Tombs and Sacred Way offer you a quite calming, restful and relaxing walk if you want to get out of Beijing for a day. Many travel agencies cover this as part of Badaling Great Wall tour. The tombs is about 50 kilometers (31 miles) northwest from Beijing in Changping County, at the foot of Tianshou (Heavenly Longivity) Mountain. It covers 13 emperor’s mausoleums, 7 concubines tombs and one grave for eunuchs. It was listed in the World Heritage List In July, 2003.

From the third empeoror of Ming Dynasty (Zhu Di) who built his tomb here until the last emperor who hang himself outside the Forbidden City, altogether 13 empeorors buried themselves in this area in the course of 230 years.  Each tomb is indepedent with others with distances ranging from half a kilometer to eight kilometer. The layout and design are very similar. Being the oldest and largerst, Chang Tomb is the most grand. Yong Tomb the most delicate and Siling (Si Tomb) the smallest.

DingLing has been excavated so visitors are allowed to get into the underground burial chamber itself. However, the burial chamber is deep in the underground with a very steep climb down. It’s quite difficult for those who have problems with their heart or who are not used to enclosed spaces.

Whether the Ming tombs is very interesting or not really depends on your interests. It is worth a visit If you’re interested in the history, culture, feng-shui meaning and significance behind the buildings. All you need to know is what door to use and how many times to swipe the transportation smart card when getting there by bus 872. With time you will crack how the bus system works.

Sacred Way offers you a very peacefull walk. It is often tranquil, not crowded with a 1km avenue of weeping willow trees, attractive carved columns, 400 year old carved stone statues of ainimals and human figures which served as guards of honor of Ming emperors. It doesn’t go straight and it’s a curve. The statues are carved out of a piece of stone and quite interesting. It is worth lots of photos. The restroom facility just inside the south entrance of Sacred Way. You will definitely enjoy the stroll down the Sacred Way on a clear day.

Ming Tombs and Sacred Way can be done via a tour, or hiring a vehicle. If you are adventurous, you do it by public transport. In my opinion, how you actually do it probably depends on your budget.

Everything You Need to Know Before Visiting Mutianyu Great Wall

Useful Tips to Help You Plan Your Mutianyu Walk

Mutianyu & Summer Palace day tour Beijing

Mutianyu Great Wall is around 1.5 hours of driving from downtown Beijing, or 1 hour 20 minutes if you are coming from the airport by road. It is a good alternative for Badaling. With fewer tour buses and stops, Mutianyu is much quieter and easier to walk in than Badaling. Besides being the longest fully restored section of Great Wall, Mutianyu attracts visitors because it has the convenient  facilities including cable car, chairlift and toboggan. With the easier walking conditions and fewer crowds, Mutianyu is much more enjoyable to walk in than Badaling.

Go Early-Just Be Prepared To Walk

The best way to have an exciting tour of the Mutianyu is to start very early at the crack of dawn. Getting to Mutianyu early in the morning you will enjoy the best walk, with the perfect opportunity to ride cable car or chairlift for the shortest trip up the wall. You should, however, relieve yourself before reaching the Mutianyu since there are very limited restrooms. The entire Mutianyu section is 2.2 kilometers long, going early in the morning, therefore, gives you adequate time to tour all the towers starting from the first to the twenty tower.

Bring Comfortable Shoes

Walking the Great Wall of China is no stroll in the park although the surface of Mutianyu is generally smooth. The section between tower 19 and 20 (left towers when you’re facing the entrance) is really steep, containing approx. 450 steps. If you find climbing vertical steps exciting, you will enjoy this part of the wall.

Similarly, the vertical steps between the 1st and the 6th towers may add the difficulty of your walk. If you are not in good shape, you may struggle. However, thanks to the cable car and the chairlift, you can still get to the top of the Mutianyu without hiking up the wall. You only need to book a seat in the either. A word of caution, though, you cannot use a toboggan ticket on a cable car and vice versa, as different companies run both the chair lift / toboggan and the cable car, and do not accept each others’ tickets. A return ticket for the cable car will not get you down on the chairlift or toboggan. You can buy tickets for all three at the top, so best to decide before you go.

Check the Weather Forecast

It’s advisable to checkMutianyu weather forecast before you start your walk, if  heavy rain/ snow/ low cloud or other severe weather conditions is predicted then postpone your walk for another day.

How Much Time It Takes to Walk Mutianyu

The entire Mutianyu walk takes approx. 2 -3 hours, with plenty of relaxation, resting, picture taking along the way. The Mutianyu trails are are well formed and easy to follow, which makes walking along it relatively easy. It takes on average of 40 minutes to hike uphill to the wall , with some breaks regardless of individual fitness, age and/or length of stride.

Walk up the trails you will reach the sixth, eighth or tenth tower. If you are coming from the Dream Stone City or the South Entrance, near the toboggan, walk up the stairs you will reach towers six or eight. Alternatively, walk up from North Entrance close to the cable car station, and ascend the stairs till you reach tower eight or ten.

Three Ways to Visit Mutianyu

There are three popular means of ascending / descending the Mutianyu. They include;

  • Toboggan ride
  • The chairlift
  • The Cable car
Mutianyu Great Wall toboggan

1. The Mutianyu Toboggan ride

If you are in search of a fast and convenient way of returning to the entrance, your solution lies in riding the toboggan. Situated on between tower 6 and tower 5, no marking, near a side gate on the Wall, toboggan runs for 5184 feet or 1580 meters long. Open hour: 8am-5pm in summer. 8:30am – 4:30pm in winter and costs 60RMB per person. From 1998 when it started operating, the toboggan runs all year around, only pausing operations during extreme weather conditions like heavy rains or snow.

Everything You Need to Know about Mutianyu

Mutianyu Great Wall Toboggan uses the theory of acceleration of gravity and makes you dive along the mountain path like low – latitude flying or high – speed driving. The toboggan ride goes down a series of zigzag bends, with an altitude difference of 100 m (328 ft). Carts for single and double is available so that adult can keep their child accompany during the toboggan ride.

The toboggan is fun, safe and not scary at all, although you may be backed up a little. Moreover, it is easy to use control features – push handle forward = speed up, pull back = brake. Avoid getting stuck behind other riders who are scared of moving fast, if you don’t want to ruin your fun. Mutianyu Toboggan down cost: RMB 100.

The Best Time to Ride the Toboggan

The perfect timing to have a memorable toboggan ride on the Mutianyu is on weekdays. Go either early in the morning from 8 am to 11 am or much later in the afternoon between 2 pm to 5 pm. Try, to avoid visiting the Mutianyu during holidays or on weekends, as more people would take weekends to explore it, making the Great Wall rather crowded than usual.

Restrictions for riding the Mutianyu Toboggan

The sick, the elderly as well as children below the ages of ten or have a height measuring less than 130 cm, must be accompanied by a responsible adult to ride.

2. The Chairlift

A 550 meters long open chairlift will take you from the parking lot to tower six and vice versa under ten minutes. The open ski-lift kind of cable car can comfortably accommodate 2  passengers side by side. The ride offers a perfect elevated opportunity to sit back, relax and savor the breathtaking beauty of Mutianyu Great Wall section. It works from 8 am to 5 pm during summer, while in winter, it runs from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The good thing about the chairlift is that if you have two-way tickets, you can ride down either using the chairlift or the toboggan. The chairlift give you the chance to relax if you had  a longish hike, sit back, and enjoy the scenery.

How to get to Hefangkou Great Wall

Hefangkou Great Wall is located at Hefangkou village, Huairou county, about 75km (46miles) away northeastern of Beijing. Hefangkou is quiet, easily accessible, yet it attracts far less visitors than Badaling Great Wall. It’s a ideal site for hiking and short excursions. Originally built during the North Qi Dynasty (550-577), most of the Walls were rebuilt during the Jiaqing reign of the Ming dynasty. It’s about 20km (13miles) in length with 23 watchtowers. Hefangkou is famous for its jagged cliffs and steep drop-offs. This kind of ‘wild’ bit of the Wall is best done via a tour, or hiring a vehicle. If you are adventurous, you do it by public transport. In my opinion, how you actually do it probably depends on your budget.

By Car

Hiring a private car getting to Hefangkou is a good choice if your budget is not tight and want to avoid the crowds and traffic. If you are travelling with 3 or 4 people, this way is really good value for your money.

By Bus

Alternatively, Bus 936 is a good option to visit Hefangkou Great Wall. Bus 936 from Dongzhimen Outer that runs daily between 7:00am-19:00pm is the fastest, most direct way to reach Hefangkou by bus so far. It takes around 2 hrs or 2.5 hrs from Dongzhimen Outer to Hefangkou and it costs around 4.8RMB by using Beijing IC Card/commuter pass and the full price is around 14RMB. Be sure to get off at Qinglongxiadaokou bus station where you can walk to Hefangkou.

Where is the 936 bus station in Beijing?
How to get by bus to 936 Hefangkou , Great Wall hiking, camping936 bus station is on the outside bus transfer depot at Dongzhimen Outer, which is also next to Mutianyu 867 bus station. The bus transfer depot is just outside of exit B of Dongzhimen Line 2 subway staion. There are signs, in English, throughout the subway station pointing you toward the bus transfer depot and exit B. Most of the buses are inside bus transfer depot in a massive building.

While 936 bus station is on the outside bus transfer depot and a little bit difficult to find. The easiest way to find it is to go to the main entrance of Dongzhimen Outer bus transfer depot then walk anticlock wise around the block until you get to the another bus station. Luckily, you can get there from Dongzhimen subway station within 20 minutes on foot.
